SUMMARY:An American Double Bill
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Barber:  A Hand of Bridge.  \nA Hand of Bridge\, composed by Samuel Barber\, has a libretto written by Menotti\, his life partner. One of the shortest operas to be regularly performed (under ten minutes)\, introduces two unhappily married couples playing a hand of bridge\, during which each character has an arietta in which he or she professes his or her inner desires. \n  \nGian Carlo Menotti: The Medium\n \nThe second of these operas is Menotti’s The Medium. Premiering in 1946\, The Medium tells the story of Madame Flora who\, with the help of her daughter Monica and Toby\, a mute servant\, tries to cheat her clients through faked seances. She is touched herself by a hand during one of them\, an occurrence she cannot explain\, and which drives her to insanity and murder. The ballroom of Ayers House provides the perfect ‘drawing room’ atmosphere needed for these intimate works.  Run time – approx. 1 ½ hours\, including a 20 minute interval. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBookings

SUMMARY:Gounod's Faust
DESCRIPTION:Charles Gounod: Faust.\nWith its irresistible stream of melodies\, Gounod’s Faust has long been a favourite in the international world of opera. Like Carmen\, it began life as an Opera Comique with dialogue interspersed with musical numbers and\, also like Carmen\, was only transformed into “Grand Opera” with sung recitatives in order to satisfy the demands of Paris Opera House. \nWe plan a flirtation with Faust’s treatment in different countries in its “formative” years\, including Valentin’s aria which was only composed (in English) for the Covent Garden premiere and later translated into French for the Paris Opera House season. \nBookings

SUMMARY:Sir Arthur Sullivan: The Zoo (A Musical Folly)
DESCRIPTION:THE ZOO 3rd December 2025\, 7 00 pm Adelaide Zoo \nIn 1875\, three months after writing the sensationally successful one act opera\, Trial by Jury\, Sullivan wrote another one-acter\, The Zoo\, with Bolton Rowe as librettist. A farcical story concerns two pairs of lovers: one involving a nobleman\, who goes to the zoo to woo the girl who sells snacks there and tries to impress her by buying and eating all of the food. And another couple involving a young chemist who believes that he has poisoned his beloved by mixing up her father’s prescription with peppermint that he had meant for her. A light-hearted tale elevated with sprightly\, charming music from the hand of the composer described by WS Gilbert himself as “incomparably\, the most accomplished English musician of his age”. The stage was ripe for the remarkable successes struck by these two icons over the following twenty years. \nCreative Staff\nStage Director: Nicholas Cannon\nDesigners: Deborah Johnson/Alexandra Woolston\nTheatre Technician: Aaron Woolston\nHead Administrator: James Scott\nMusical Director/Pianist: Nerissa Pearce \nCast\nLaetitia Grinder: Alexandra Woolston\nAesculapius Carboy: Mark Oates\nEliza Smith: Deborah Johnson\nThomas Brown: Nicolas Cannon\nMr Grinder: James Scott \nRefreshments\nArrival drink\, canapes and grazing platter included. \nBookings\nTHE ZOO 3rd December 2025\, 7 00 pm Adelaide Zoo

SUMMARY:Sir Arthur Sullivan: The Zoo (A Musical Folly)
DESCRIPTION:THE ZOO 1ST December 2025\, 5 00 pm Adelaide Zoo \nIn 1875\, three months after writing the sensationally successful one act opera\, Trial by Jury\, Sullivan wrote another one-acter\, The Zoo\, with Bolton Rowe as librettist. F. Händel’s beloved Greek myth in which two lovers are forever split when Polyphemus kills Acis in a brutal\, jealous rage. In mourning\, Galatea transforms Acis into an ever-flowing river. \nThe opera—full of wit\, pathos and exquisite music—is a warning about the transitory nature of love and pleasure. \nCo-Opera has a long tradition of sharing opera in fun\, accessible performances. We have taken our productions to pubs\, parks\, and even shearing sheds across the country and overseas. Now we are bringing opera to Adelaide Botanic Garden! \nEnjoy the natural surroundings with a backdrop of majestic trees\, as the stage and gardens are gradually transformed from sunset into a waterfall as the opera builds to its climax. \nImmerse yourself in Händel’s exquisite music sung by some of Adelaide’s finest young singers\, accompanied by the premier baroque orchestra\, Ensemble Galante\, in this thrilling new production. \nDoors open at 6:30pm so make a night of it with a picnic (or pre-purchase a gourmet box of delectable goodies from the Gardens Café and Kiosk)\, enjoy a drink or two under the evening sky\, and relax on the lawns before the performance begins. \nDon’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to see an evening performance in your favourite garden! \nCOVID-safe planning \nThis event is held on Conifer Lawn in Adelaide Botanic Garden\, which is a large outdoor space with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the experience whilst seated. \nCOVID-19 safe measures will be in place\, including the ability for groups to comfortably social distance (1.5m). \nPlease remember to practise good hygiene\, wash your hands regularly\, and utilise the hand sanitiser available on the night. \nIf you have any COVID-19 symptoms\, please refrain from attending the event and contact us to discuss options. \nWeather \nPlease note this event is outdoors\, on grass\, during springtime. Please consider the weather forecast and dress warmly if needed\, wear appropriate footwear\, and consider any allergies.
